The Stairs

Architecture, in its most honest expression, is not merely the resolution of a functional program but a delicate balance between beauty and technique, a constant search for rational solutions that never sacrifice the poetry of space.

In the practice of Jorge Mastropietro Architects, this philosophy takes shape with particular strength in elements often dismissed as predetermined or purely utilitarian. The staircase, frequently constrained by the technical necessity of bridging levels, represents for us a profound opportunity to express a worldview where design improves people’s lives. We do not view it simply as a conduit between floors, but as a sculptural object that organizes the home’s narrative and acts as a sanctuary for the soul, elevating the spirit of the inhabitant through a carefully choreographed interplay of light, form, and materiality.

This approach demands a constant dialogue between the heavy and the light, the transparent and the solid. Our projects often reveal how a staircase can emerge from a marble plinth that anchors the structure to the ground, only to ascend through floating wooden treads that provide the tactile warmth essential for domestic comfort. The choice of materials is never secondary; it is the alphabet we use to write the story of the space. Utilizing tempered glass railings and minimal hardware allows the structure to remain almost invisible, removing visual barriers and letting the architecture breathe, while lacquered black metal provides a geometric definition that highlights the rationality of the design.

True architectural power is found in integration. The void traditionally left beneath the steps is reclaimed as a productive volume, transformed into bespoke integrated furniture that vanishes behind pure white surfaces, optimizing urban density without compromising sophistication. We treat natural light as a building material as tangible as concrete; consequently, we position our circulations in direct dialogue with the exterior. By placing staircases against large windows, we turn a daily climb into a panoramic experience of shifting light and shadows, reinforcing the inhabitant’s connection to the environment and the natural world.

Each of these vertical journeys is designed to culminate in an architectural "remate" or climax that gives meaning to the entire path. Whether it is a skylight flooding the space with zenithal light, a bold shift in color, or a window framing a specific view, this final point celebrates the transition and reminds us that in architecture, the journey is as significant as the destination.

Our vision of beauty is not a decorative luxury but an ethical and aesthetic response, seeking the perfect harmony between necessary function and the poetry every home deserves.
