A chronicle of how humanity learned to defy the opacity of the wall to reclaim its right to light
At Jorge Mastropietro Architects, we understand that this gesture of opening is not merely a technical concession to ventilation, but the primordial act that allows a shelter to transform into a home integrated within its time and context. The window is the architectural element that breaks the isolation of the shelter to establish direct communication with the outside world; it is proof that a building, while seeking to protect us, also desires to root itself with intention in its surroundings, recognizing that interior life only reaches its fullness when nourished by the light and rhythm of the world beyond.
From the exterior, the window acts as the narrative pulse of the facade, defining the formal composition through a sophisticated interplay of solids and voids. We do not view it as a standardized puncture, but as a rhythmic design tool: at times manifesting as minimal frames that punctuate the surface, at others as sequences of forms that defy symmetry, or as complete glass walls that dissolve the building's gravity. This reading is enriched by a materiality that dialogues with the project’s skin. Whether through wooden frames that provide organic nobility, or through the use of natural or anodized aluminum in various tones, the window has the power to blend into the whole or stand out through bold contrast, granting the building its final identity and contemporary elegance.
However, it is from the interior where the window reveals its most poetic and transformative dimension. Here, it ceases to be a construction element and becomes a frame that captures and dignifies reality. Depending on the user's position within the space, each opening functions as a "shakkei", or borrowed scenery, transforming the natural environment or the vibrant urban scene into a living, everchanging piece of art. We do not merely allow the climate and light to penetrate the sanctuary of the home; we design the window to act as an empathic mediator that enhances the psychological well-being and health of those who inhabit the space. Ultimately, the window is as fundamental as the wall itself: while the wall grants us silence and protection, the window gifts us connection and belonging, reminding us that the most honest architecture is that which allows us to be part of the horizon while remaining safe at home.
