The original townhouse, built in 1880, is a 4-story brick structure. The goal of the renovation was to transform the space into two two-bedroom duplex apartments, adapting it to the needs of modern living while preserving the charm of the original facade.
The townhouse is part of a row of similar buildings from the same period, which is why the front elevation was carefully restored and left unmodified, maintaining the historical continuity of the row. This approach ensured the preservation of the building's character while accommodating contemporary living needs.
To enhance views, the walls of the east (rear) facade on the first three levels were opened and replaced with sliding window partitions. In the lower apartment, the living area, kitchen, and dining room were positioned on the parlor level, with the bedrooms placed on the ground floor to maximize the views from the main living spaces. The design of the parlor level was further opened up, seamlessly integrating the interior and exterior, offering unobstructed views from the front to the back of the house.
All materials used in the renovation were chosen for their environmental sustainability, including bamboo floors, high-efficiency appliances, and double-pane windows, ensuring both comfort and energy efficiency.
