The Manila townhouse, an existing residential brownstone in Jersey City, underwent a substantial renovation and reconfiguration, transforming it into a modern, efficient home. The project, carried out by JMA, includes two 2-bedroom duplex apartments, each with its own outdoor space, while preserving the original 1880s historic exterior.
Much of the building's historic character was retained, blending old and new elements. Exposed brick walls, hidden beneath previous walls, were revealed, adding a historic touch to the modern aesthetic. Key windows were enlarged to allow more natural light into the spaces, while indirect accent lighting was strategically placed to enhance the ceilings and walls.
The facade, cornice, and railing details were restored based on historic photographs, and the front door was replaced with a replica of the original. This careful renovation approach created a unique living space that honors the building's history while incorporating modern comforts.
