This abbreviated project presented a unique challenge: to design a low-income residential unit that fits within a suburban neighborhood while maintaining urban density. The goal was to create a family residence that could function as a standalone unit on a single lot but also be versatile enough for repetition in a group setting, ensuring the design felt deliberate and appropriate.
The resulting module engages the street traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular, through the articulation of volumes. These volumes create planes that add visual interest at various scales, making the structure dynamic and engaging. The materials chosen were selected to address the economic constraints of the project. They are sustainable, readily available, and do not require specialized labor. Wood, brick, and aluminum panels were used, providing both practicality and aesthetic appeal while staying within budget.
