This project was a significant challenge due to the small lot size, poor orientation, and limited views. Located in a crowded suburb near Buenos Aires, the house was designed for a young couple without children and built atop an existing building. A key client requirement was to preserve the original facade while creating a harmonious connection between the new and old structures.
The concept centered on creating an introspective space, with the facade serving as a solid plane interrupted by varying-sized openings. Instead of traditional windows, these openings feature glass to protect from heat, rain, and wind. The smooth plastered exterior, with its clean, rectilinear geometry, gives the house a distinct character that contrasts with the surrounding buildings.
Inside, the house avoids traditional rooms and instead offers functional areas defined by hinged wood panels, inspired by Japanese sliding doors. These panels pivot around a central axis, while changes in ceiling height and floor level further define spaces. The flexible interior allows the wood and glass panels to be adjusted, creating dynamic transitions and an open, adaptable living environment.
