This proposal for a Free Library in Jersey City conceptually embraces the power of knowledge, symbolized through a sculptural "book tower" at the heart of the design. The tower serves as a tribute to the printed word in an era dominated by digital media. Constructed with semitranslucent acrylic, the tower offers both protection and security for the books inside while allowing the contents to be visible, celebrating the importance of physical books in a digital age.
At night, the tower transforms into a glowing beacon, casting light that illuminates the surrounding park and inviting visitors. Surrounding the tower, operable orange aluminum screens offer flexibility—closing to shield the space when necessary, yet opening to reveal seating areas for social interaction. These screens create a dynamic and engaging environment, where the space transitions between functional, protective enclosures and inviting, communal gathering spots.
